Meet Rhys Lambadarios

Engineering Manager – WA South

From Ireland to Australia, Rhys has a solid foundation in engineering, project delivery and asset integrity. Initially joining Duratec as a Project Manager Rhys is now Engineering Manager for our WA South team.

What led you to a career at Duratec?

“My career has progressed across manufacturing, mining, and construction. I’ve built a strong foundation in engineering, project delivery, and asset integrity during this time. 

I began in Ireland with Johnson & Johnson and Stryker Orthopaedics, where I developed core technical capabilities in process improvement, automation, and quality systems within highly regulated environments. At Stryker, I worked as part of an engineering team delivering the company’s first automated packaging line, which provided strong exposure to system design, integration, and validation across multiple disciplines. After this, I relocated to Australia and joined Fortescue as a Project Engineer, where I supported project delivery in an operational mining environment. 

My journey with Duratec has been progressive. I initially joined as a Project Manager delivering remediation and structural works, before moving to Fortescue to broaden my experience. I have since returned to Duratec and progressed into my current role as WA South Engineering Manager. 

Duratec appealed to me due to its strong focus on quality, safety, and asset integrity, and the opportunity to work in an environment where delivering long-term value and doing things the right way is prioritised.”

How does your role safeguard and extend asset and infrastructure?

In my current role, I provide engineering leadership and technical oversight to ensure remediation and construction works are delivered and extend the life of critical infrastructure. 

I safeguard assets by ensuring compliance of methodologies, signing off technical and quality documentation, driving structured processes and supporting teams with risk management and constructability. 

A key part of my approach is being highly process driven. I believe that when robust systems and controls are in place and followed rigorously, outcomes become safer, more reliable, and more predictable.

What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?

One of my biggest professional achievements was being part of an engineering team that delivered Stryker’s first automated packaging line. 

My role focused heavily on the technical aspects of the project, integrating multiple engineering disciplines such as automation and control systems, robotics, developing mechanical, electrical and vision systems, materials handling and system integration. 

The project was technically complex and required a high level of precision, coordination, and adherence to strict quality and compliance standards. 

I consider this a significant achievement as it delivered a step-change improvement in production capability while reinforcing the importance of technical excellence, quality, and structured delivery. These are principles I continue to apply in my role at Duratec.

What do you enjoy most about working at Duratec?

“What I enjoy most about working at Duratec is the combination of technically challenging projects and the people within the business. 

The diversity of work across marine, mining, and industrial sectors provides constant opportunities to apply engineering solutions to real-world challenges. 

Equally important is the quality of the people at Duratec. There’s a strong culture of collaboration, accountability, and support, which makes it easier to deliver consistent outcomes and align with the company’s values. 

It’s an environment where doing things the right way is prioritised, and where engineering input plays a key role in achieving successful project delivery.”

What have you learned during your time at Duratec and what has inspired you?

During my time at Duratec, I have developed a deeper understanding of asset remediation and the importance of structured engineering and quality processes. I’ve learned that early engineering input is critical, clear documentation drives consistency, and strong quality processes reduce risk and rework.  

I’m inspired most by the tangible impact of restoring and extending the life of critical infrastructure, as well as the continuous opportunity to learn new technologies, materials and methodologies. This ongoing development keeps the work engaging and ensures we continue to improve how we deliver projects.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?

My advice would be to focus on building strong technical fundamentals while developing a structured and disciplined approach to work. It’s important in the early stages of your career to gain as much hands-on experience as possible. Learn how to interpret specifications and quality requirements, develop strong communication skills and be proactive in learning from others.

Most importantly, follow processes and develop good habits early. If you approach your work in a structured way and align with principles of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement, you will set a strong foundation for long-term success.
