Ashley MacDonnell

What led you to a career at Duratec?

“I was drawn to Duratec because of its strong focus on asset integrity, maintenance and extending the life of critical infrastructure. With my background and interest in non-destructive testing (NDT), the role felt like a natural fit. It allows me to apply my technical experience while working closely with clients to understand their inspection and asset management challenges and identify practical solutions. Joining the Gladstone team has also given me the opportunity to help grow Duratec’s NDT capability across Central Queensland and build relationships with clients across a range of industries.”

How does your role safeguard and extend asset and infrastructure?

“My role in Non-Destructive Testing is focused on identifying defects, deterioration and potential areas of concern without causing damage to the asset being inspected. Using a range of inspection techniques and advanced technologies, we provide clients with reliable information about the condition of their assets so they can make informed decisions about maintenance, repairs and ongoing asset management.

By identifying issues early, we can help prevent failures, minimise unplanned downtime and support the long-term performance of critical infrastructure. I also enjoy working with clients to determine the inspection method that will deliver the best result while minimising disruption to their operations.”

What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?

“One of my biggest professional achievements has been developing my experience in the NDT industry and reaching a point where I can combine the technical knowledge and practical experience from my previous trades with my career in NDT. Being able to understand a client’s inspection challenge, identify the right NDT solution and communicate the benefits of that solution has been particularly rewarding.”

What do you enjoy most about working at Duratec?

“What I enjoy most about working at Duratec is the variety of work and the people I work with. Every asset and inspection challenge is different, which keeps the role interesting and gives me the opportunity to continue developing my knowledge and experience.

I also enjoy the client-facing side of my role and the opportunity to build strong working relationships. There is a real sense of satisfaction in understanding what a client needs and working with them to develop a practical solution that adds value to their operation.”

What have you learned during your time at Duratec and what has inspired you?

“During my time at Duratec, I have learned the importance of looking beyond the inspection itself and understanding the broader asset management challenge. Technical knowledge is important, but clear communication, understanding a client’s requirements and working effectively as part of a team are just as valuable.”

What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?

“My advice would be to stay curious, ask questions and take every opportunity to learn from the people around you. You do not need to know everything when you start your career, but having the right attitude and being willing to learn can take you a long way.

I would also encourage people to get as much practical experience as possible and not be afraid to step outside their comfort zone. Building strong relationships, taking pride in your work and being reliable are just as important as technical qualifications. A career develops over time, so focus on building a strong foundation and making the most of every opportunity.”
