Duratec completes remediation on two road bridges on Kangaroo Island, protecting the vital infrastructure that keeps communities on the Island connected
Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third-largest island, stretching across more than 4,400 square kilometres, and is home to more than 5,000 residents. Connected by approximately 1,600 kilometres of road, the island supports thriving agricultural, fishing and tourism industries while welcoming almost 200,000 visitors each year.
For communities spread across four major townships and numerous smaller settlements, reliable road infrastructure is essential. It connects residents to services, supports local businesses, enables tourism and helps industries move goods throughout the region
To help maintain this critical connectivity, Duratec delivered remediation works on two key bridges along Emu Bay Road and Gum Creek Road, protecting essential infrastructure that communities and businesses rely on every day.
Protecting community connections
Like many ageing infrastructure assets across Australia, both bridges were experiencing concrete deterioration that threatened their long-term durability and structural integrity.
The remediation works were designed to address deterioration, extend asset life and ensure that these vital transport-links continue supporting local communities, freight movements and economic activity well into the future.
Working in a regional environment presented unique challenges, requiring specialist remediation expertise, adaptive delivery methods and a strong focus on maintaining access throughout the works.
Project scope:
- Concrete breakout and removal of deteriorated materials
- Reinforcement corrosion treatment and protection
- Replacement of damaged reinforcement
- Installation of formwork and structural repairs
- Concrete patch repairs using specialist remediation systems
- Ground condition improvements and asset stabilisation
- Durability enhancements to extend asset service life
At Gum Creek Road Bridge, site investigations revealed that the condition of the concrete structure was significantly worse than originally anticipated, requiring an increase in repair volumes and remediation depth.
Drawing on specialist remediation capability and engineering expertise, the team adapted its delivery approach and successfully addressed the expanded scope while maintaining quality outcomes.
At Emu Bay Road Bridge, remediation works restored the structural integrity of the culvert roof and addressed significant concrete spalling and reinforcement deterioration, ensuring the asset remains fit for service for years to come.
