Full refurbishment of Parkes Wharf in WA – all while keeping naval operations running and protecting the local marine environment.
The scope of work involved remediation and maintenance of the wharf deck, service ducts, fenders, structural piles, and replacement of fuel pumps. Works were carried out above water and within a sensitive marine environment, while maintaining operational, shipping, and berthing capabilities for all vessels.
SCOPE OF WORKS
Wharf Remediation
- Remediation of concrete cracks, patch repairs, and spalling to the top of the wharf deck.
- Remediation of concrete cracks to the soffit and walls within the service duct.
- Remediation and replacement of steel members and grating in the service walkways.
- Concrete repair of the service duct sumps and headstocks.
- Cleaning of loose and corroding material from the sacrificial concrete soffit of the service ducts.
- Replacement of bolts on 19 fenders and chains on the dolphin fenders.
Structural Pile Maintenance
- Concrete patch repair of pile encasements.
- Wrapping of steel piles below the concrete encasement.
- Encasement of piles where the concrete encasement could not be repaired.
Fuel Pump replacement
The Quarantine and Oil Fuel Installation (OFI) suck-back pumps located in the service tunnels adjacent to Parkes Wharf were replaced. These were like-for-like replacements, utilising existing pipework and fittings.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Duratec designed an access scaffold system that allowed personnel to work on two piles simultaneously. Two scaffold systems were supplied to enable rotation, reducing downtime. Fixed scaffolding reduced the impact of tidal movements and proved more efficient than boat access.
- As Parkes Wharf remained operational throughout the works, the program was carefully coordinated around ship movements. Duratec maintained close communication with Port Services to ensure works did not interfere with ship arrivals, departures, or ceremonies.
- The project was located within a sensitive flora/fauna environment (e.g. penguins, seagrass, marine pest control). Duratec’s extensive experience on marine projects at HMAS Stirling enabled the transfer of knowledge and lessons learned, helping to mitigate environmental risks.
