Duratec, in partnership with the National Capital Authority, is proud to have received the ‘Heritage Resource or Tool’ award at the 2025 National Trust (ACT) Heritage Awards for the National Carillon Heritage Façade Restoration and Digital Innovation project.

Located on Queen Elizabeth II Island at Lake Burley Griffin, the National Carillon is a Canberra icon and a symbol of the city’s cultural and architectural heritage. The project involved comprehensive façade restoration using scientifically informed conservation techniques, developed in collaboration with heritage architect Eric Martin and Associates. Restoration methods included advanced petrographic analysis, custom repair mixes, and structural crack repairs, all aligned with Burra Charter principles.

In addition to the physical restoration, the project pioneered the use of digital tools in heritage conservation. The Annoview defect management system enabled real-time documentation and remote approvals, improving efficiency and oversight. A full 3D digital model was also created for future asset management, alongside automated QA documentation and BI dashboards.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our project team, heritage consultants, and partners who brought technical excellence and creative thinking to a complex conservation task,”

said Stephen Pate, who accepted the award on behalf of Duratec and the National Capital Authority. “It also highlights the importance of blending tradition with innovation in heritage work.”

The restored Carillon continues to serve as a vibrant community hub, hosting concerts, weddings, and national celebrations. Duratec is honoured to contribute to preserving this landmark for future generations.
