After a rigorous tendering process, Duratec has been appointed managing contractor of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust’s repairs and asset maintenance program. Its aim? To create the finest foreshore park in the world.

The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (Harbour Trust) is devoted to rehabilitating former Defence
and other Commonwealth lands around Sydney Harbour. Many of these places have been hidden away for years, run-down and, in some cases, contaminated. The organisation continually works to conserve the natural and built heritage of its lands, and keep them open and accessible to all Australians.

As managing contractor of the Harbour Trust’s repairs and asset maintenance program, Duratec’s role is twofold – to conduct a condition audit of the Harbour Trust’s assets and provide project management services in the delivery of high-priority repairs and maintenance works.

The program involves six sites – Cockatoo Island, Sub Base Platypus, Headland Park, North Head Sanctuary, Macquarie Lightstation and Woolwich Dock. The assets contained within these spaces include sea walls, commercial buildings, accommodation, camp grounds, search light towers, memorials, cafes and restaurants.

The condition audit part of the project involves assessing the fixed plant and equipment, building fabric, grounds and reticulated infrastructure within each precinct. As well as establishing the condition of the assets, Duratec must determine a scope of works, as well as costs involved with current and future repairs and maintenance. This will assist with the prioritisation, tender and management of the works.

The project management part of the job requires Duratec to take the completed asset condition audit and put together design briefs and schedules, which can then be developed into work packages. The team will then tender for and engage sub-contractors before overseeing the delivery of the works.

As managing contractor, Duratec will draw upon strengths including technical expertise; experience with Defence, Commonwealth and heritage projects; and the ability to deliver multiple services across a variety of sectors. The company also brings proficiencies in working on occupied buildings; managing subcontractors and consultants; and delivering projects on time and within budget.

While undertaking this prestigious project, Duratec will keep the Harbour Trust’s vision front of mind – to provide places that will enrich our culture and leave a lasting legacy for the people of Australia.
