Duratec has installed a new cross atop Christ Church Cathedral to mark a significant milestone in the restoration project.
The trefoil cross was created using like-for-like techniques and is a testimony to the intricate details and craftsmanship being used throughout the restoration.
MJ Van Der Vyver, Operations Manager at Duratec, said:
“This marks a significant milestone in the restoration of Christ Church Cathedral, with the successful installation of the trefoil cross on top of the Warriors’ Chapel.
“Constructed by a Coppersmith to maintain authenticity, this cross will act as a memorial to the men and women of the Newcastle and Hunter region who lost their lives in the First World War and will be part of Newcastle’s iconic skyline for years to come. It is a privilege to be a part of this project.”
Anglican Bishop of Newcastle Dr Peter Stuart consecrated the cross on Wednesday morning (24th June 2026). It will now stand on the Warriors’ Chapel for generations to come.
Dr Peter Stuart, Anglican Bishop of Newcastle, commented: “The trefoil cross is one of the ornaments of the Cathedral that helps us understand the spiritual nature of the building,” Bishop Peter said.
“What we’re seeing is the tremendous craftsmanship that goes into buildings as significant as the Cathedral.
“The copper comes on site in a roll, and then it’s moulded, soldered, bent in all sorts of ways to create the beauty we now get to see.”
Bishop Peter said he was thrilled with the partnerships being formed to help bring the project to completion.
The insurance-led repairs have been supported by the Cathedral parish community, NSW Government, Newcastle Anglican representatives, and local businesses.
The restoration project is expected to be completed in early 2027.
