Duratec focuses on managing the risks that have the potential to cause the most serious harm.

Our Critical Risk Program identifies and controls activities that could result in fatality or life-altering injury, supporting our commitment to Zero Harm and consistent, safe project delivery.

What Are Critical Risks

Critical risks are hazards or situations that, if not effectively controlled, could result in fatality or severe injury.

At Duratec, we have identified 14 key critical risks based on:

  • Safe Work Australia high-risk construction activities
  • Internal and industry incident data
  • Corporate risk analysis

Critical Risk Standards (CRS)

To manage these risks, we use Critical Risk Standards (CRS).

These are:

  • Simple, one-page standards outlining minimum requirements
  • Focused on 4–6 critical controls
  • Designed for quick, practical use on site

Each standard links directly to detailed procedures, ensuring clarity and consistency across all operations.

Temporary Works

Only work with temporary works that are designed, installed, verified, and inspected by competent persons in accordance with approved plans.

Types of Temporary Works

Temporary works include but not limited to:

  • ground support systems
  • propping and jacking systems
  • formwork and falsework
  • temporary access systems
  • scaffolding
  • mobile crane pads and tower crane bases, grillages, ties
  • anchor points for suspended platforms and rope access personnel

Design

  • A design brief is required for all medium and high complexity temporary works
  • Temporary works are to be designed by a qualified designer
  • Must consider existing structures and foundations conditions
  • Detailed up-to-date drawings and plans must be maintained
  • Design changes must be authorised by the designer prior to installation

Installation & Dismantling

  • Temporary works must be installed as per the design and/or installation instructions by a competent person(s)
  • SWMS for the installation and dismantling of temporary works must include controls for the work to be completed safely, including preventing persons or objects falling and management of penetrations

Verification & Handover

  • Prior to use temporary works must be verified as installed as per design by a competent person as per Appendix 1 of Temporary Works Procedure
  • Verification and handover inspections are to be recorded using approved Inspection and Handover checklists

Inspection & Maintenance

Temporary works must be inspected by a competent person:

  • as per the designer and/or manufacturer’s requirements, relevant legislation, Codes of Practice, Australian standards
  • following any events that may affect its stability
  • Inspection records are to be completed on approved inspection checklists

Emergency Response

Emergency response must consider:

  • Injury during erection and dismantling
  • Collapse of temporary works
  • Damage to permanent works
  • Access to affected areas
  • Maintaining emergency access and egress to work areas
