Meet Steve Hennessy
What led you to a career at Duratec/Atec?
“I hit one of life’s crossroads after welcoming my second child and spending 10 years in senior management roles within the hospitality industry. It was at a birthday party for one of the children in the mothers’ group that the HSEQ path was floated (by my now manager). During my younger years I spent some time in the mining sector where I undertook a Diploma in Safety. I’ve always had a passion for helping people and am very lucky and extremely grateful that Duratec took a chance on me. Looking after façade projects in the Perth CBD for the past three years has led to the natural migration to Atec Facades.”
How does your role safeguard and extend asset and infrastructure?
“My role helps to identify and assess risk through all stages of our projects, provide advice to the team and Client as well as contribute new and practical solutions. My role promotes worker health and safety as well as company objectives by mitigating risk. “
What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?
“I’m passionate about everyone understanding the role they have in ensuring safe working practices are adhered to. Encouraging the team at all levels to complete their mandatory training and ensuring that we remain compliant is extremely important. I’m sure many people have received a reminder email or call from me!”
What do you enjoy most about working at Atec?
“The team and the opportunities to learn are what makes my role so enjoyable. Atec consists of a very knowledgeable and fun group of people who are always there to support each other and develop as a unit. I’m exposed to interesting opportunities enabling me to learn and grow in the new build space.”
What have you learned during your time at Atec / what has inspired you?
“There is a lot more to glass than meets the eye. We’re challenged with inventing bespoke solutions for high-risk problems and then navigating the real-world application of those solutions, which I find both interesting and inspiring. I enjoy watching the impact of Atec’s strategies aimed at early identification and mitigation of risks through the design and construct lifecycle and applying my safety lens to support the process.”
What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?
“Ask all the questions and surround yourself with good, knowledgeable people that will take the time to explain the answers.”
