Through its wholly owned subsidiary, WPF, Duratec is helping address this challenge by delivering specialised pipeline fabrication, installation and asset enhancement solutions that strengthen critical energy infrastructure.
A leading example is WPF’s work on the Darwin LNG Pipeline Duplication Project, carried out through 2024-25.
WPF was engaged when Santos required fabrication and installation services; the team was tasked with delivering complex infrastructure that would support a 122-kilometre dual-diametre carbon steel pipeline, linking the Barossa Gas Export Pipeline to the existing Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas Facility (DLNG) at Wickham Point, NT. The project was designed to ensure the facility remained operationally resilient and capable of supporting Australia’s future energy needs.
Mobilisation across states to maintain momentum
Working to an accelerated program, WPF fabricated approximately 250 tonnes of pipe spooling and 50 tonnes of structural steel. To meet demanding schedule requirements, the team operated a dual-location fabrication campaign across its Naval Base, WA, and Darwin, NT, workshops, running concurrent day and night shifts to maximise productivity and maintain momentum.
This approach demonstrated the strength of Duratec’s nationally led, locally delivered model, combining the scale and specialist capability of a national business with the responsiveness and agility of local teams.

From fabrication to installation and on-site services
Quality, safety and reliability were central to the project’s success. All piping was fabricated in accordance with AS2885 and ASME B31.3 standards, ensuring safe operation within a critical LNG operating and processing environment.
To maximise asset longevity, piping systems were coated using specialised systems designed for high-pressure, corrosive and ultraviolet-exposed environments, while structural steel components were hot-dip galvanised to provide long-term corrosion protection.
When additional site support was required, WPF mobilised 80 personnel and equipment to Darwin within just two weeks. Bringing together project managers, coded welders, pipefitters, mechanical fitters, scaffolders and riggers, the team safely executed complex installation works within an operational facility.
This project was vital in strengthening the relationship with Santos, as WPF provided ongoing site support with their Darwin facilities and was able to secure further projects nationally with the tier one company.
Recognition for infrastructure delivery excellence
Despite the complexity and pace of delivery, WPF achieved zero lost time injuries and a 0% does-not-comply rate across completed field fit weld joints. The project was made possible by a highly skilled workforce, strong stakeholder partnerships and the integration of specialist engineering, fabrication and construction expertise.
These outcomes were ultimately recognised by Weld Australia, which awarded the Darwin LNG Pipeline Duplication Project the 2025 Welding Excellence Project of the Year and was recently covered in Australian Welding Magazine’s June/July Edition.
More importantly, the project demonstrates how Duratec and WPF partner with clients to build, protect and renew critical infrastructure. By delivering reliable, future-focused solutions in complex operating environments, the team is helping safeguard the infrastructure that underpins Australia’s energy security.
