Meet Tim Lowery
What led you to a career at Duratec?
“Having delivered friable asbestos and demolition projects as a subcontractor across New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, I had been watching Duratec’s growth for a number of years. I always had positive experiences working with the business, so when a role became available, it felt like the right next step. I jumped on a plane to Victoria and haven’t looked back since.”
How does your role safeguard and extend asset and infrastructure?
“Typically, my work takes place at the very beginning of a project, so I’m often on site before any other trades. It’s a critical stage of the project lifecycle because we create a safe environment for everyone who follows. As a supervisor, I’m passionate about passing on the fundamentals to the next generation, ensuring they develop the right skills and experience before they progress into more senior roles.”
What’s your biggest professional achievement and why?
“Being admitted to the Faculty of Asbestos Management Australia and New Zealand (FAMANZ) is one of my proudest achievements. It came after delivering a particularly challenging two year project in the Northern Territory and meant a lot to me, given I left school at 14 and built my career from the tools up. Through FAMANZ, I have the opportunity to speak with government and industry decision-makers about issues such as mental health and advocate for greater consideration of the human impact felt by those working on the front line. It’s been a great platform to represent the workforce and share practical insights that can help shape future policy and industry outcomes.”
What do you enjoy most about working at Duratec?
“I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing people grow, both professionally and personally. Many of our team members come from backgrounds like my own, and they work hard to create opportunities for themselves and their families. It’s rewarding to play a small part in that journey. Whether it’s helping someone progress in their career, buy their first home, or provide opportunities for their kids, those outcomes matter. I don’t just see it as building teams; I see it as building communities. Having Duratec support that approach 100% has meant a lot.”
What attracted you to the role?
“What attracted me to the role at Duratec was the opportunity to join a company with strong growth potential and a culture where your voice is heard. In our line of work, you need to foresee issues well ahead of time to deliver a successful project, so transparency, communication and attention to detail are critical. The role gives me the opportunity to leverage my people skills and make sure everyone understands the scope in fine detail before a single boot hits the ground.”
What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?
” “Anyone can do your job, but only a few people can solve your problems. Get good at solving problems.”
That was my dad’s advice when I was looking for my place in the world. It took me years to truly understand what he meant. Establish your ethics early and stay true to them. They’ll guide you to the places you belong.”
